How you modify the links shown on the top or left
navigation bar depends on the type of site you are using. The following
sections provide the details.
Modify the Top or Left Navigation Bar in a Non-Publishing Site
In a non-publishing
site, the navigation settings for the top and left navigation bars are
in two separate locations. The link to the top navigation management
page is called Top Link Bar in the Site Settings page, and the link to
the left navigation bar management page is called Quick Launch.
Clicking on either link opens a page where you can add links, edit existing links, and reorder the links (see Figure 1).
The following sections explain how to manage the navigation options in these pages.
Add a Link to the Top Navigation Bar
To add a link to the top
navigation bar in a non-publishing site, navigate to the Top Link Bar
management page, as explained earlier, and click the link New Navigation
Link. This opens a page with an option to type the link’s web address
and description, as shown in Figure 2.
Add a Link to the Left Navigation Bar
To add a link to left
navigation bar in a non-publishing site, navigate to the Quick Launch
management page, as explained earlier, and click the link New Navigation
Link (refer to Figure 1).
This opens a page with the option to specify the link’s web address and
description, as well as the heading under which to place the new link
(see Figure 3).
Add a Heading to the Left Navigation Bar
A
heading in a non-publishing site’s left navigation bar is a navigation
link that can have other links under it. When you add a link to the left
navigation bar you have to choose under which heading that link should appear.
To add a heading to the left
navigation bar in a non-publishing site, navigate to the Quick Launch
management page, as explained earlier, and click the New Heading link
(refer to Figure 13.8).
This opens a page with the option to type the link’s web address and
description. This is similar to the page for adding a link to the top
navigation bar (refer to Figure 13.9).
(Note that a heading cannot be under another heading.) When you click
OK, the heading is added to the list, and you are able to add links
under it.
Edit a Link in the Top or Left Navigation Bar
To edit a link in one of the
navigation bars, open the management page for that bar, as explained
earlier in this article. In the management page, locate the link you
want to edit and click the Edit icon next to the link (refer to Figure 13.8). The page that opens allows you to edit the settings for that link.
Note
For some of the built-in options (such as the built-in headers in the left navigation bar), you can’t change the web address.
Remove a Link from the Top or Left Navigation Bar
To remove a link in one
of the navigation bars or to remove a header in the left navigation bar,
open the management page for that navigation bar, as explained earlier
in this article. In the management page, locate the link you want to
delete and click the Edit icon next to the link (refer to Figure 13.8). In the page that opens, you can delete the link or header by using the Delete button.
Note
Deleting a heading that has
links under it also deletes the links. You might want to move the links
to another heading by editing each link and changing the heading
setting.
